what is a unity candle?

A unity candle is a ceremony that is often incorporated into wedding celebration. Although this common tradition originated in America, it has become popular around the world and can be seen in many different religions and cultures. While the notion of a unity candle may vary from place to place, the core idea is to blend two individuals or families together.

The most widespread version of this ceremony involves two taper candles, often decorated with ribbons that represent the two families involved. During the ceremony, each family member will then light their own designated candle and afterwards, the bride and groom take each candle, one at a time, to light the larger unity candle–typically placed in between them. The unity candle burning together symbolizes how these two families are becoming one–united as one unified whole.

Unity candles are also often poured in advance of a wedding and handed out during special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries. As it is lit during special times throughout life, it serves as an ongoing reminder of how far love can reach when united in a relationship or commitment.
